LA Contemporary Dance — Live Performance Video at ODC Theater in San Francisco
I had the opportunity to film a performance by LA Contemporary Dance at ODC Theater in San Francisco, capturing the dancers, choreography, and energy of the performance as it unfolded on stage.
Contemporary dance is especially interesting to film because so much of the story happens through movement, timing, light, and space. Rather than simply documenting the performance from a fixed position, I wanted the footage to feel dynamic and cinematic while still respecting the choreography.
ODC Theater is a great space for this kind of work. The lighting, stage design, and intimate setting made it possible to capture both the larger movement of the ensemble and the smaller details of the dancers' performances.
For this project, I focused on creating a contemporary dance video that could work as both documentation of the performance and a piece of visual storytelling. The final edit emphasizes the rhythm and physicality of the dancers while giving the audience a sense of what it was like to be in the theater.
I enjoy filming live performance because every show is different. Whether I'm shooting contemporary dance, theater, music, or another live event, the goal is to create footage that feels connected to the experience of actually being there.
